The chalkboard ceilings at the Mama Shelter in Paris

Credit this nifty design flourish to—wait for it—Philippe Starck, who put chalkboards on the ceilings of the lobby at Mama Shelter (view slideshow) to encourage "freedom, participation, and self-expression." A noble idea, though of course the value of the results sort of depends on who's doing the expressing.
