World's Best Hotel Design Details

by David Kaufman

The Marcel Wanders staircase at the Mondrian South Beach

The designing Dutchman was commissioned to handle nearly every element of the just-opened Mondrian (view slideshow), but his 12-foot steel black staircase is the standout. Crafted over a period of 40 days, with high-pressure jets etching out each metal component, it features the same abstract floral pattern used elsewhere in the hotel. It's a welcome dose of elegance in an area that also happens to include Mansion, Crobar, and Nikki Beach.
