World's Top Spots to Sweat

by Anja Mutić

Temazcal, Maroma Resort and Spa, Mexico

To stick to the Mayan belief that everything begins in darkness, all light is shut out of the small pyramid on the beach at Maroma Resort and Spa on Mexico's Riviera Maya. Inside the womblike sanctuary, the temazcal ritual unfolds as lava rocks from the Popocatépetl and Ajusco volcanoes near Mexico City are heated, placed in a central pit, and doused with water infused with rosemary, basil, chamomile, and bougainvillea petals to create healing steam. While some might find the idea of sweating in the dark with a small group of strangers a little weird, just wait until the temazcalera (the spiritual MC of temazcal) arrives and makes you all chant Mayan incantations. After that, smearing yourself with cool aloe vera and dashing into the sea will probably seem perfectly normal.

Temazcal at Maroma Resort and Spa, $120 for 90 minutes.
