World's Top Spots to Sweat

by Anja Mutić

Thaimazcal, W Retreat Koh Samui, Thailand

In a nod to global fusion, the W Retreat at Koh Samui has given the ancient Mexican ritual of temazcal—"bathing hut" in the Nahuatl language—a Thai twist to create the Thaimazcal. Treatments kick off with a personal consultation to establish an individual blend of herbs and essential oils for your post-sauna body scrub. Inside the cavernlike Thaimazcal room, inspired by the limestone cliffs of southern Thailand, the Thaimascaliera guides you through relaxation activities, including chanting. You don't have to join in as she gives life-affirming thanks through songs and drumming, but you've come this far. End with an invigorating shower in three outdoor waterfalls (hot, lukewarm, and cold), and at the very least, you'll discover the true meaning of squeaky clean.

Thaimazcal chanting ritual, body scrub, drink and snack, and choice of massage or facial at W Retreat Koh Samui, $138 for two and a half hours.
