The Island Experience, Ilha Grande, Brazil
Perfect for: Beach-bod sculptors
Sweat it out: Brazilian beaches are like Brazilian BBQs—a never-ending parade of carnal temptation. Become your best self at the Island Experience on Ilha Grande, an Edenic rain forest–covered isle 100 miles west of Rio de Janeiro, with the one-two whammy of inspiration (small swimsuits) and perspiration (miles of hiking trails). As at most fitness retreats, the goal is to detox, unwind, and jump-start a healthier you, but here the natural environment takes center stage. Twice-daily yoga sessions are held in a glass-walled studio with views of the Lagoa Azul; sea kayaking and snorkeling take you to crystalline lagoons; and hiking excursions stop off at pristine palm-fringed beaches for important suntanning time.
Cool down: It's all about easygoing immersion here. Limited numbers (no more than 12 guests per week) make for impromptu (alcohol-free) hot-tub parties after alfresco candlelit dinners (mostly vegetarian food, with the occasional grilled fish). Although, if you'd rather kick back in a hammock on your lodge's veranda and watch the sun melt into the horizon, hey, it's your island. Complimentary massages sooth sore muscles, and capoeira and samba demos paint a layer of Brazilian culture on the whole endeavor. (There's painting proper, too.) The vibe is unhurried, activities optional. In other words, the only appointment you've got is with a little thing called satisfaction.
