Antigua + Barbuda Restaurants

Admiral's Inn
Nelson's Dockyard
English Harbour , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 460 1027

The 18th-century dockyard engineer's office was converted into a shipshape little brick-and-wood-shuttered inn back in the 1960s. At sea level, there's a nautically decorated pub draped with ships' pennants. French doors open to a broad dining terrace beside an inlet of the harbor. Grab a table beneath the guinep tree and order the pumpkin soup, snapper meunière, or the catch of the day. It's the perfect spot to daydream of centuries past—the inn sits next to the ruins of a boathouse—while you watch modern-day yachts sailing by.

Open daily 7:30 am to 10:30 pm.

Big Banana Pizza in Paradise
St. John's , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 480 6985

If you're jonesing for a pizza, follow the ravenous cruise-ship crowd to this 18th-century rum warehouse for a slice loaded with fruit toppings (coconut, pineapple, and strawberry). The huge fruit crushes are also meals unto themselves. Don't leave without a souvenir T-shirt, made famous by Mick Jagger in a TV appearance. There's live music every Thursday, but if crowds give you indigestion, grab a pie at their airport location on the way home.

Closed Sundays.

Coco's Hotel
Valley Estate , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 460 2626

Coco's Hotel is the perfect stop on a trip up or down the west coast. Three small gazebolike terraces sit on a bluff overlooking the water. Navy-blue tablecloths echo the sea and sky, white muslin billows around the wooden pillars. The menu has your standard Euro-American fare with Caribbean touches. The standouts are light salads and wraps, which are perfect for leisurely tropical lunches.

Open daily 7 am to 11 pm.

Dennis's Bar + Restaurant
Ffryes Bay , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 728 5086

Ffryes, on the south side of Antigua, is one of the island's most popular beaches, and finally it has a restaurant and bar worthy of its beautiful curve of sand. Three covered pavilions jut off an orange-and-green clapboard house on a rise overlooking the bay and the Sherkley Mountains. Daily menus usually feature curried goat and grilled snapper or grouper, but Dennis is at its best at the Sunday pig roasts, which have live Soca music.

Open daily 11 am to 10 pm.

Le Bistro
Hodges Bay
St. John's , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 462 3881

Chef Patrick Gauducheau presides over this shrine to French haute cuisine, one of the island's first. The pale-orange and light-blue dining room, with equally colorful checkered cloths and wicker chairs, is the place to indulge in guilty Franco pleasures: rich homemade onion soup, garlicky escargots, grilled duck breast with ginger and cilantro-tarragon jus, and perhaps a Pouilly Fuissé from the extensive French wine list.

Open Tuesdays through Sundays 6:30 to 10:30 pm.

Papa Zouk
Hilda Davis Drive
Gambles Terrace
St. John's , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 464 6044

This minuscule eatery in a traditional island chattel house is more rum shop than restaurant, with more varieties of the favored island draught—200 at last count—than any other bar in the Caribbean. Madras tablecloths and fishnets with Christmas lights fit the Caribbean vibe almost as much as the owner, who holds court while dispensing local lore (in his pre-bar-keeping life he taught Martina Navratilova and Robert Palmer how to scuba dive). Outside, chirping tree frogs add to the restaurant's soundtrack of zouk, the Guadeloupean Creole music.

Opens Mondays through Saturdays at 7 pm.

Turners Beach Bar & Restaurant
Turners Beach
Johnson's Point , Antigua
Antigua + Barbuda
Tel: 268 462 9133

Turner's Beach Bar sits on a great expanse of sand on the west coast, a few miles south of Ffryes Bay. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served beneath sunny yellow umbrellas on white plastic furniture. The menu of fresh seafood, salads, wraps, and burgers is written casually on a blackboard. The service is not swift, which is just fine, as there's always time for another Wadadli beer.

Open daily 9 am to 9 pm.
