Another fashion graduate from the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts, Anna Heylen got noticed in 1993 with her collection of couture-garbed dolls and introduced her first women's collection in 1996. Despite her worldwide presence, she still works the counter one day a week in her tiny Antwerp shop, selling formal and informal pieces, often edged with lace or screen-printed with the words "Liberty is a never-ending love-story" or Heylen's signature red hand.

While Antwerp is sprinkled with chocolate-makers such as Godiva, Leonidas, and Neuhaus, hometown favorite Hans Burie is known for his over-the-top shop window with chocolate creations that change every month, plus diamond-shaped chocolates, chocolate euros, and chocolate replicas of historical buildings such as the city's 16th-century town hall.

Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Diamondland

Belgium
Tel: 32 3229 2990
www.diamondland.be

The largest showroom in Antwerp's diamond district of 1,500 dealers, Diamondland sells loose diamonds far below retail, explains how diamonds are graded, and gives free guided tours for a behind-the-scenes look at gems being cut, polished, and set. Call ahead to reserve a place on the tour.

Fish and Chips
36–38 Kammenstraat
Antwerp
Belgium
Tel: 32 3227 0824
www.fishandchips.be

Don't come here looking for cod and frites. This übercool shop has three floors of edgy wear (superdry, Religion, April77), independent labels, and vintage fashions from the '50s through the '90s (with heavy emphasis on retro punk rock fads). You get to the basement shoe department by sliding down a tunnel chute (or the elevator, if that doesn't appeal), and there's a DJ on Saturdays and school holidays. Needless to say, it's a favorite among teens and young hipsters.

Flea Markets
Antwerp
Belgium

Catch the Friday morning spectacle (8 a.m.–1 p.m.) at Vrijdagmarkt, the square in front of Museum Plantin-Moretus, where a spirited auction of furniture, household goods, and secondhand clothing has taken place every week since the 16th century. Sales are conducted in Flemish but the auctioneer will accept bids in English. On the cobbled lane around the Cathedral of Our Lady, the Saturday Lijnjwaadmarkt (9 a.m.–5 p.m.) is the place for good buys on antiques, small collectibles, and bric-a-brac from Easter through September. Every Sunday on the square at Sint-Jansvliet (9 a.m.–5 p.m.) there's a small but wonderful little antique market with low prices and sellers still happy to haggle.

Het Modepaleis
16 Nationalestraat
Antwerp
Belgium
Tel: 32 3470 2510
www.driesvannoten.be

In a Belle Epoque–style building at the junction of Nationalestraat and Kammenstraat, you'll find the shop that helped put Antwerp on the world fashion map. Dries Van Noten's two-story corner boutique with red leather sofas and marble floors retains the 19th-century storefront's original name, which means "the palace of fashion", and features the designer's modern bohemian and Asian-inspired collections for men and women.

Closed Sunday.
