Concierge.com's insider take:
Set on a hilltop in Mallorca's Tramuntana Mountains, overlooking the quaint town of Puigpunyent, Son Net was the first luxury country-house hotel on the island—and is still one of the finest. Once the private residence of American hotelier David Stein, the 17th-century manor was converted into a hotel in 1998. The 31 rooms and suites are built around an interior courtyard that retains its original well, and the interiors are full of Mallorcan charm, with period furniture and local fabrics. Some of Stein's modern art also graces the walls, including original works by David Hockney, Andy Warhol, and Marc Chagall. Be aware that the rooms vary greatly in size: The standard double is a bit tight and feels over-furnished, while the Presidential Suite is over 1,600 square feet, with two queen-size four-poster beds and a bathroom large enough to include its own sitting area, complete with sofa. In 2008, four garden suites and a shared pool were added in a secluded part of the grounds. Each suite has a private terrace with whirlpool tub. Chef Christian Rullan adds a modern touch to the Mallorcan dishes served in the Oleum restaurant, once an ancient olive-press room. Try the lamb from the Tramuntana served with rosemary and creamy Mahón cheese. Outside, there's a 100-foot infinity pool surrounded by private cabanas—it's also where the poolside Gazebo restaurant serves simple grilled meats, fish, and salads in the summer months.
