Converted from the late Art Deco–style Banque du Canada building, the 152-room W Montréal does the usual W thing with the wacky names (the gym is called "Sweat" and the penthouse suites are dubbed "Wow" and "Extreme Wow") and the high-concept design—glowing panels and a fountain in the middle of the Living Room. Otto, the restaurant, was an instant trend when it opened with the hotel in 2004, with seashell-studded banquettes as uncomfortable and cute as Jimmy Choos, and the four—count 'em, four—bars also pack them in. The location has something to do with it: Victoria Square was recently spiffed up, and the hotel feeds you directly into Montreal's Underground City (an amazing subterranean warren of malls), and Métro system.
