It doesn't get more private than this. For nearly 20 years, this seven-acre island off the north coast of the main island of Viti Levu was the hideaway of Alex Van Heeren, owner of New Zealand's famed Huka Lodge. When he decided to allow guests, he added very little. A swimming pool is due to be finished at the end of 2005, and an open-air suite sits at the far end of the island for those who want to get away from it all. Otherwise, the extent of development is a two-bedroom elevated bungalow decorated in local style with handcrafted furniture, wood beams, and brown and black Masi cloth covering the walls; the other bungalow houses the dining area, where vividly flavored meals are served. The overall effect is magnificent simplicity, overseen by the warm, ebullient managers Stanley and Dawn Simpson, who make you feel as if this is your very own island home.
