St. Vincent + the Grenadines Restaurants

Basil's Bar
Britannia Bay
Mustique
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 488 8350

Basil's Bar is less a bar than a floating legend. Presided over by the eponymous, larger-than-life Basil, this thatched shack perched on stilts was long the only game in town, and consequently you might have found yourself sharing the small, impromptu dance floor with Mick Jagger as well as local fishermen. Though not quite the scene it once was, it's still the place everybody ends up at during their stay, particularly for the Wednesday night "Jump Up" (or barbecue buffet) and during the island's two-week blues festival (late January through early February). Food is casual—think burgers and grilled lobster—but expensive.

The Cotton House Restaurants
Endeavor Bay
Mustique
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 456 4777
www.cottonhouse.net

There are two restaurants at the Cotton House, the informal Beach Café and the elegant Veranda. The café sits right on the beach—and serves pizzas, grilled meats, seafood, and refreshing cocktails all day long. The Veranda offers a more expansive menu with both local and Continental influences—from callaloo risotto and West Indian curry to grilled barracuda and tagliatelle with St. Vincent crab. The Great Room is the scene of afternoon tea and a weekly cocktail reception open to all island owners and visitors.

De Reef
Lower Bay , Bequia
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 458 3958

An easygoing eatery and beach bar—with a mean rum punch—serving simple, tasty local fare such as steamed mahimahi, conch curry, or lobster salad sandwiches at lunch and a three-course set dinner at night. There is a barbecue on Wednesdays, while on Sunday afternoons the place rocks to an informal jazz jam session.

Closed September to mid-November.

The Firefly
Britannia Bay
Mustique
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 488 8414

Like the hotel in which it's housed, the Firefly restaurant is an oasis of relaxed elegance in this most froufrou of settings, which has endeared it to such diners as Liz Hurley, Iman, and David Bowie. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the restaurant mixes French and Caribbean influences. Order the pineapple-shrimp curry served with rice, the spiced crab cakes, or maybe the fresh fish and chips. And arrive early for a sunset drink at the bar. The Firefly specialty drink, the "Barfly"—rum, nutmeg, papaya, and coconut cream—is addictive.

Frangipani Restaurant
Admiralty Bay , Bequia
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 458 3255
www.frangipanibequia.com

The open-air restaurant at the Frangipani Hotel has built its reputation on fine West Indian food and a broad selection of wine. The menu is traditional Creole-Caribbean, accented by fresh ingredients from Bequia and nearby islands, such as fish, lobster, and conch from the Grenadines and fruit and vegetables from St. Vincent. The wine list has bottles from Europe, South America, Australia, and California. A meal here would not be complete without the famous lime pie. Come Thursday nights for the weekly barbecue and Jump Up (dancing), with live steel-band music and an elaborate buffet including steaks, seafood, and that tasty pie.

Closed early September through mid-October.

L'Auberge des Grenadines
Belmont , Bequia
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 458 3201
www.caribrestaurant.com

Set in a three-room guesthouse, this traditional French-styled restaurant with Creole accents is overseen by French expat Jacques Thevenot and his wife, Eileen, who is originally from St. Vincent. Set so close to the water that yachters can dock seconds away, this bright-orange place is known for its juicy grilled local lobster and its fine French wine list. The restaurant includes a casual bar and offers a choice of two daily prix fixe menus along with à la carte offerings.

Closed September and October, and Saturdays May to August.

Le Petit Jardin
Port Elizabeth , Bequia
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 458 3318

Owned by Culinary Institute of America graduate Owen Belmar, formerly of the nearby ultraluxe Petit St. Vincent resort, Le Petit Jardin is considered one of the island's premier dining rooms. Located in a varnished wooden house with a lovely garden in the center of Port Elizabeth, the place sticks fairly faithfully to French standards, with highlights such as escargot spiced with anise, seafood crepes, consommé with poached eggs, and lamb with mint butter. These classics are joined by Caribbean-influenced additions, including sautéed shrimp in a coconut cream sauce and fresh fish paired with saffron rice, curry, and bananas.

Closed Sundays from May to October.

Mac's Pizzeria
Admiralty Bay , Bequia
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 458 3474

More than a pizzeria, Mac's is a 25-year-old Bequian institution. The specialty is pizza—it's true—with novel takes on the Italian classic, including lobster pizza with extra garlic. But there are other good options, too: soups and pastas, as well as typical local fare such as conch fritters. Meals are served on a breezy outdoor terrace. Mac's is also a bakery, offering all-day basics such as lime pie with shortbread crust and hearty banana bread to go.

Closed Mondays from May to November.

Porthole Bar & Restaurant
Port Elizabeth , Bequia
St. Vincent + the Grenadines
Tel: 784 458 3458

This informal restaurant serves simple local favorites, including an expert version of roti, the stuffed, rolled, East Indian snack similar to a burrito. In fact, the Porthole serves burritos as well—the only place on the island to do so. Located directly on the beach, the restaurant is housed in a store that dates from the era of the slave trade and is owned by local Noeline Taylor. She describes her cooking style as "descended from her mother," which means additional specialties such as conch souse, grilled lobster, and curried chicken. There are three-course set evening menus as well as a hearty breakfast.

Closed Sundays.
