Located on the riverfront in Old Montréal, the 27-room Auberge du Vieux-Port has shabby-chic charm in spades. Exposed brick or stone walls, casement windows opening onto the St. Lawrence River (ask for that view), wood floors, and brass beds make it all romantic; wireless Internet, a glass of wine a day, and inclusive full American breakfast are just candy. Many rooms have Jacuzzis; all have the use of the gorgeous rooftop terrace. There are also 19 lofts and apartments in four buildings behind the hotel, useful for business stays and families—they're similar in decor, but they lack that river view.

This hotel on a cobblestoned street near Notre-Dame Basilica "captures the soul and spirit of Old Montréal." Rooms in the restored 1882 depot have "a unique quality," exposed-brick and stone walls, and wood floors. Narcisse Bistro focuses on French food; in summer, dine on scallop seviche on its rooftop terrace.
