Located on the riverfront in Old Montréal, the 27-room Auberge du Vieux-Port has shabby-chic charm in spades. Exposed brick or stone walls, casement windows opening onto the St. Lawrence River (ask for that view), wood floors, and brass beds make it all romantic; wireless Internet, a glass of wine a day, and inclusive full American breakfast are just candy. Many rooms have Jacuzzis; all have the use of the gorgeous rooftop terrace. There are also 19 lofts and apartments in four buildings behind the hotel, useful for business stays and families—they're similar in decor, but they lack that river view.

The 1882 former leather factory near the St. Lawrence River "has a great location and great charm." Rooms with hardwood floors, exposed beams, and original brick and stone walls overlook the Old Port or cobblestoned St. Paul Street. "Narcisse Bistro Bar à Vin serves typical French cuisine—onion soup, duck breast. Order surf-and-turf at "the fun rooftop bar."
