The 136-room Opus Hotel Montréal combines two distinct wings: The 1914 Godin building (formerly the Hotel Godin) is fitted like a puzzle piece into a modern concrete-and-steel structure. The hotel's location, on the cusp of Boulevard St. Laurent's commercial bustle and the city's stark downtown business district, also has a split personality. But inside, the Opus comes into its own with a fanciful design that includes surrealist statements such as a life-size ebony horse with a lampshade sprouting from its head in the lobby. As at its sister property, in Vancouver, the hotel has five color-coded room categories, each of which corresponds to a fictional guest archetype (for example, masculine brown rooms were designed for "Mike," a young doctor; purple rooms are for "Didi," a shopaholic actress who really likes leopard print). But more important than your color choice is snagging a room on an upper floor—especially on weekends, when the hotel's pan-Asian restaurant, Koko, and the outdoor roof deck of the Suco Lounge turn into buzzy hot spots.—Cathay Che
