Concierge.com's insider take:
When owner Philip Murray introduced brick-red sailcloth clothes for men in 1945, he started a fashion trend that's become iconic on and off the island. Today, they're known as Nantucket Reds, and Murray's not only still stocks themtrousers, shorts, skirts, the lotit holds the trademark on the term. This is HQ for the old-school prep set, with deck shoes, polo shirts, cable sweaters in umpteen colors, and madras, madras everywhere. Murray's is an only-on-Nantucket sea of whale belts and seersucker, and a Main Street institution. Open year-round, it's also a place where locals go to "have a gam" catch up on local gossip with the Murray descendants who still run the place.
Closed Sundays, January through April.
