On the royal route from the park to the castle, Le Royal Méridien has an impressive history. Opened in 1901, requisitioned by the Nazis, appropriated by the Communists, and even used as a secret base by the wartime resistance, it was reopened in 1993 by Margaret Thatcher. The fin de siècle landmark was gutted during the war, but sensitive renovation has restored some of its florid Art Nouveau flourishes. Many of the 205 rooms have high ceilings, and French doors onto balconies. Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg once lived here, and more recent guests range from Charles de Gaulle to the Rolling Stones.
