It's hard to do justice to Canoe's eclectic collection of stylish housewares, designer gadgets, and hip trinkets. At first glance, it might seem like there's not much to be found in the spare, airy space, but soon enough you find yourself browsing the design books—and then the pretty ceramic bowls and delicate glassware on the shelves—and then you find yourself captivated by the myriad curios on the shelves—German condom dispensers, Japanese stationery and mugs, Swiss travel salt-and-pepper shakers. Even a stack of blank memo pads tied with ribbon somehow becomes a must-have accessory in this setting. And finally you're coveting each and every perfectly crafted, thoughtfully designed object. Beware: You're unlikely to leave empty-handed.

Open Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm, Sundays noon to 5 pm.

The oversize Technicolor pom-poms that garland the exterior of Cargo's warehouse-like building in the Pearl District hint at the quirky wonderland of home design goods sold here. Inside, the walls are hot pink, and vintage rickshaws bursting with inflatable toys hang from the ceiling next to Tibetan prayer banners and rusted Japanese soda advertisements. You can buy everything from seed-beaded African chairs to antique globes, cheap ethnic jewelry to Chinese lanterns. It's a store full of things you never knew you had to have, most of it very reasonably priced.—Colleen Clark

Open daily 11 am to 6 pm.

The very antithesis of a generic chain store, this handsome menswear shop harks back to another, more refined era without being stuffy or pretentious. In an intimate space, pristine rows of cashmere sweaters, tweed jackets, upscale outdoorwear, and suits cater to men with a European sensibility. But it's the colorful accessories that make this such a distinctive spot. Candy-colored socks, gorgeous floral silk ties, stylish plaid umbrellas, silk scarves in gem tones, and the like add notes of whimsy to the soberly refined clothing on offer.

Open Mondays through Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm, Thursdays 10 am to 7 pm, Sundays noon to 5 pm.

Francis May
1013 S.W. Washington Street

If you go to one clothing boutique in Portland, this should be it. Francis May, a joint venture between Connie Codding and granddaughter Pamela Baker-Miller, embodies a distinctly Portland brand of understated cool. Local classics like Pendleton wool shirts and blazers hang alongside designs from independent up-and-comers. Look for floral Samantha Pleet rompers, tribal Mociun dresses, and ruffled Church & State frocks as well as heavy industrial necklaces and geode rings. Menswear includes brogue boots by Rachel Comey, A.P.C. parkas, and Rag & Bone checked shirts. Everything is cleanly arranged on vintage industrial racks or in steamer trunks, and there are some woodsy design touches, such as buffalo plaid curtains in the dressing rooms.—Colleen Clark

Open Tuesdays through Saturdays 11 am to 7 pm, Sundays noon to 6 pm.

N.W. 23rd Avenue
Portland , Oregon

If you're looking to get away from the mainstream chains downtown, N.W. 23rd Avenue is the answer. Lined with upscale independent boutiques, this sweet little shopping street is much cozier than downtown and offers a more unpredictable assortment of wares. Start your stroll at the intersection with Lovejoy Street and head south toward Burnside Street. Along the way, you can succumb to the temptations at Compleat Bed & Breakfast, with its fine bed linens and sleepwear; ogle the shoes and chic women's apparel at Elizabeth Street and Zelda's Shoe Bar; and buy a present for the kids back home at Child's Play, a stocked-to-the-rafters toy store. Give yourself—and your credit card—a well-deserved break at Papa Haydn, which specializes in sophisticated American fare and over-the-top desserts, or stop for tiramisu gelato at Mio Gelato.

Work's a drag, no question. But once you walk into Office you might just change your mind. The forward-thinking folks at this shop can help you inject some flair into your work spaces. Ever thought a trash bin could reflect your personal style? Ever wish for a laptop case that wouldn't look so businesslike at happy hour? You've come to the right place. The eclectic mix of retro and contemporary accessories reflects Portland's priorities—you'll find green (the philosophy, not the color) paper goods from Russell + Hazel, locally made products like Acme Made's hip laptop bags, quirky letterpress stationery, handsome European notebooks—and even vintage typewriters.

Open Tuesdays through Fridays 11 am to 6 pm, Saturdays 11 am to 5 pm, and Sundays 11 am to 4 pm.

Yes, it's the country's largest independent bookstore with more than a million volumes in stock, but it's also much more than that. Like disciples come to pay homage at a shrine, its vast and fanatical following can be seen browsing the innumerable shelves day and night (they're open until 11 pm, making this a popular spot even after dinner). Those with obscure interests are likely to find not only a few titles on the subject, but perhaps an entire shelf among the million books on offer. And with its unique approach of stocking used books right alongside new ones, thrifty readers will feel no guilt about stocking up on dozens of reads. Beware that it can be a bit like the Bermuda Triangle—hours upon hours can be lost within its doors. If you need a break, refuel at the on-site café. And if you need guidance, head for one of the information desks, where knowledgeable staff can supply you with a color-coded map and help you track down just about anything.

Open daily 9 am to 11 pm.
