Set on four rambling acres close to Rincón on Puerto Rico's scenic and often overlooked west coast, the Horned Dorset is an ultraluxe surprise well away from the tourist masses. Designed in a tropical Spanish colonial style—think courtyard fountains, red tiles, vaulted ceilings—the property includes an original 17-suite building and 22 newer swank and spacious villas. The latter are perched on a hillside in their own compound with a communal pool, as well as private plunge pools en suite. The hotel has its own perfect slice of beach and is close to Rincón's top surfing spots.

Set among the hills on the island's western coast, the Spanish neo-colonial with plantation decor is "intimate, like a friend's elegant oceanside estate, with service that really takes care you." "The main activities are the pool, reading, and resting." Restaurant Aaron promises "a spectacular setting and exquisite French meals, the highlight of the day." Rooms have Balinese beds but eschew all electronics.
