Puerto Rico Shopping

Belgian Delights Chocolatier
204 Calle San Justo
Old San Juan
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00901
Tel: 787 725 7744
www.belgianchocolatespr.com

A Belgian native fell in love with a Puerto Rican beauty and moved to the island to marry her…and open a decadent, authentic European chocolate shop. At Belgian Delights, you'll find everything from coconut-dusted truffles to lemon-scented squares to molded dark-chocolate chickens. Wonderful homemade jams and syrups (try the local tamarind or the more classic cassis flavors) also make great take-home gifts. But don't be surprised if the shop is empty: Though they love coffee, Puerto Ricans aren't wild about chocolate. Which means all the more for those of us passing through!—Leigh Newman

Open Mondays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm, Sundays 12 to 5 pm.

Cappalli
206 Calle de O'Donnell
Old San Juan
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00901
Tel: 787 289 6565

A handful of talented, happening young Puerto Rican designers are making a name for themselves on the island and off (among them Stella Nolasco and Luis Antonio). But Lisa Cappalli has recently created an inexpensive, flirty ready-to-wear line to complement her couture collection, which she sells from a boutique in Condado (151 Avenida de Diego; 787-724-6575). Look for kicky lace-edged sundresses made out of everything from African textiles to French cottons. The store also stocks cute, colorful plastic slippers from Brazil (some designed in tandem with Vivienne Westwood), plus other whimsies.—Leigh Newman

Open Mondays through Wednesdays 12 to 7 pm, Thursdays through Saturdays 12 to 8 pm.

David Antonio
69 Avenida Condado
Condado
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00907
Tel: 787 725 0600
www.davidantoniopr.com

Looking for menswear? At David Antonio, classics like the men's guayabera shirt are deconstructed and put back together into funky new garments. The local designer also creates sportswear and more formal outfits for women, often with embroidery and other touches of tropical flair.

Open Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm.

Galería Botello
208 Calle Del Cristo
Old San Juan
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00901
Tel: 787 723 9987
www.botello.com

Lovers of tropical art should be sure to stop by this Old San Juan gallery named for the late Angel Botello. The Spanish-born, French-educated artist's use of bright colors to paint scenes of island life led some critics to call him the "Caribbean Gauguin." The gallery has an expansive collection of contemporary Latin American art, including some of Botello's own pieces.

Open Mondays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm.

Mi Pequeño San Juan
107 Calle del Cristo
Old San Juan
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00907
Tel: 787 977 1636
www.mipequenosanjuan.com

Mi Pequeño San Juan carries tiny ceramic reproductions of the doorways of Old San Juan, hand-painted by a local artist. Kitschy, sure, but also somehow irresistible.

Open daily 10 am to 6 pm.

Nono Maldonado
1112 Avenida Ashford
Condado
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00911
Tel: 787 721 0456

Talk to San Juan locals about shopping, and it won't be long before someone brings up Nono Maldonado. His elegant lines helped convince Puerto Ricans to look to homegrown designers for their high fashion. He certainly had the credentials: Before returning to the island in 1976, Maldonado served as fashion editor for Esquire. His designs for men and women are impeccably tailored—think Chanel with a more tropical palette. The second-floor shop is, of course, in the hippest part of Condado. Maldonado fans should also take a look—or book a room—at The Cervantes, the hotel he designed in Old San Juan.

Open Mondays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm.

Suola
1060 Avenida Ashford
Condado
San Juan
Puerto Rico 00911
Tel: 787 723 6653

Stop at Suola for towering Christian Louboutin heels and boots, plus a knockout selection of Valentino shoes of every stripe. End-of-season sales, held in March, August, and December or January, can be impressive: Look for discounts of 50 to 60 percent. The staff, though, is a bit snooty. Ignore them, please.—Leigh Newman

Open Mondays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm.
