Talk to San Juan locals about shopping, and it won't be long before someone brings up Nono Maldonado. His elegant lines helped convince Puerto Ricans to look to homegrown designers for their high fashion. He certainly had the credentials: Before returning to the island in 1976, Maldonado served as fashion editor for Esquire. His designs for men and women are impeccably tailored—think Chanel with a more tropical palette. The second-floor shop is, of course, in the hippest part of Condado. Maldonado fans should also take a look—or book a room—at The Cervantes, the hotel he designed in Old San Juan.
