Macabre oddities and unusual garden items inspired by the natural sciences fill this gallerylike space at Paxton Gate. The front of the shop has weathered-oak shelves displaying the skulls of rodents and small animals, cases of brilliantly colored butterflies pinned under glass, and giant vintage trophy heads of bison and deer (fear not: none of them are endangered or poached). The squeamish can distract themselves with unusual jewelry and small-batch soaps made with heady botanicals, before heading to the rear of the shop, which explores plant life. Here you can discover orchids and succulents, an array of unusual plant books and garden tools, and an open-air backyard that showcases Paxton Gate's custom outdoor architecture.—John A. Vlahides
