Since opening in 2006, Rocpool Reserve has added some much-needed contemporary chic to the city's hotel scene. It may be the owner's Italian roots, but Rocpool's flamboyance wouldn't look out of place in Milan, from the bold colors and marble floors to the eye-catching sculptures and towering flower displays. The 11 rooms increase in size and gadgets (sorry, amenities) along with the rack rate. Room 10, for instance, has a private covered outdoor terrace with an infrared sauna and hot tub. Local, seasonal ingredients are at the heart of its restaurant, but the hand-dived Isle of Skye scallops might come with sweet-and-sour pork belly, braised peppers, and roasted pineapple. Rocpool is about as typical of the Highlands as a giraffe in Manhattan, but it's also the hippest place in town to dock your iPod. The price includes a Continental breakfast.
