Piranske Soline, Ljubljana, Slovenia

19 Mestni Trg
Slovenia 1000
Tel: 386 1 425 0190's insider take:

Alain Ducasse is among the devotees of Piranske Soline's salts, which are produced using 14th-century methods. The salt is harvested in pans that date back an astonishing 1,200 years, where workers use wooden scrapers to drain the salt and then manually load it into wagons for transport. Soline's tiny Ljubljana shop on Mestni Trg stocks everything from salt in its most basic form to salt mills, salt cellars, and sea-salt body scrubs. The small linen bags are great to take home as are the wickedly delicious dark-chocolate bars topped with fleur de sel.
