"Beautiful large porches surround the lodge, and it has a great lawn with plenty of seating and fire pits overlooking the May River." This Lowcountry property has cottages with hipped metal roofs, brick chimneys, cushioned window seats, and beds with crisp white linens. The screened-in porches are "so lovely for reading and lounging, you could sleep out there." "The food is the biggest thing holding them back. The wine list is great, but the dishes are mediocre and expensive." "Staff truly take pleasure in serving."

Truth be told, the Inn at Palmetto Bluff was built as bait. It's the centerpiece of an upscale housing development (imagine Mayberry with million-dollar homes) at the headlands of the May River, midway between Hilton Head and Savannah. And although the marshland setting is undeniably pretty, what better way to lure prospective buyers than with a top-shelf hotel? The property consists of 50 waterfront cottages in one of two sizes—enormous (1,140 square feet) and really enormous (1,340 square feet)—a sophisticated two-story spa, a fitness center that overlooks the pool and the river, and a splendid restaurant. Fishing and kayaking are both gratis, but the real sporting attraction is the Jack Nicklaus–designed 18-hole golf course, with its stunning views and resident alligators.—2005 Hot List
