The New Sheridan is actually quite old. The hotel was built in 1891, when Telluride was flush with the spoils of the gold mines, and now caters to a certain old-school set who relish its authenticity. Nonetheless, highlights of its heritage include the Victorian decor, the archival photos of silver and gold miners, and the location, in the vibrant, funky heart of town. The three-story redbrick hotel has 32 rooms that are simply decorated, with dark-wood headboards, plaid throws on the white duvets, and walls lined with wainscoting (some rooms used to have shared facilities, but a 2008 renovation added private bathrooms to every room). The downtown location puts you in the center of the action, but be aware that your après-ski nap may be interrupted by an impromptu drum circle on the sidewalk below.—Samantha Berman
