Tennessee Shopping

Ernest Tubb Record Shop
417 Broadway
Nashville , Tennessee
Tel: 615 255 7503

In a world of iPod turntables and music careers launched on MySpace, the late Ernest Tubb's stores still bank on the belief that oldies are goodies. In business since 1947, the store on Lower Broadway carries a broad stock of hard-to-find country and bluegrass albums; if you can't find it there, chances are it may be at Tubb's other local location (in Music Valley Village, near the Gaylord Opryland hotel) or on their Web site. Either way, the staff is happy to help you hunt.

Open Mondays and Thursdays 10 am to 9 pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 10 am to 7 pm; Saturdays 9 am to 1:30 am; and Sundays 9 am to 7:30 pm.

Grimey's New & Preloved Music
1604 8th Avenue S.
Nashville , Tennessee
Tel: 615 254 4801

Compact discs and slices of vinyl still hold currency at Grimey's, the indie-music store beloved by local fanboys and suburban moms alike for its non-elitist approach to buying and selling music. Located just south of downtown, the store encompasses four rooms holding both new and used records and CDs. The selection is vast—rock to bluegrass to rap to metal and back again—but the stock is well edited. Grimey's frequently hosts free afternoon performances by artists booked to play that night at The Basement, the club conveniently situated downstairs (615-254-8006;

Open Mondays through Saturdays 11 am to 8 pm, Sundays 1 to 6 pm.

Hatch Show Print

Bold colors, chunky block letters, sharp graphic layouts: Hatch Show Print posters have a look all their own. Hatch has been operating since 1879, printing posters and handbills for clients as diverse as Prohibition-era evangelists and major modern sports companies, with hundreds of singers, bands, and music festivals filling out the mix. Snap up a poster from their in-store stock, much of which is displayed on the walls and windows overlooking the streets of Lower Broadway. Prices start as low as $5. You can also place an order for a custom poster. Expect a turnaround time of four to five weeks.

The Hill Center
Hillsboro Pike at Hillsboro Circle
Nashville , Tennessee

This outdoor mall is the newest shopping center to open in the upscale neighborhood of Green Hills, which already claims the tony Mall at Green Hills (Louis Vuitton and Tiffany are both tenants). Highlights include a branch of the British chain Jigsaw, the area's largest Whole Foods market, and H. Audrey, a high-end women's boutique stocking locally impossible-to-find brands like Rick Owens. The store is owned by Holly Williams, granddaughter of Hank Sr. and a successful singer-songwriter in her own right.

Store hours vary.

4317 Harding Road
Nashville , Tennessee
Tel: 615 292 4188

A Belle Meade classic, this boutique is where old-school Nashville dames get their fix of high-end clothes and accessories by designers including Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Prada, and Balenciaga. The service is impeccable (expect a phone call when shipments of your favorite designer's clothes arrive) and discreet, which makes it a must-shop for stars like Faith Hill and Reese Witherspoon. Bargain hunters wait patiently for the store's famous tent sale each July, where the former season's styles are marked 70 to 90 percent off.

Open Mondays through Fridays 10 am to 5:30 pm, Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm.

Manuel Exclusive Clothier
1922 Broadway
Nashville , Tennessee
Tel: 615 321 5444

There's no better way for a Nashville musician to say "I've arrived" than to take the stage in a custom-made Western suit from the atelier of Manuel Cuevas, fashion's "Rhinestone Rembrandt." Cuevas has made distinctive (read: flashy) stage wear for performing peacocks including Dolly Parton, Marty Stuart, Johnny Cash, and even Jack White, who plays with his band the Raconteurs wearing a Manuel-designed suit with bone appliqués. A couture getup like Jack's starts at $5,000, and includes Manuel's personal consultation. Those not blessed with a huge wardrobe budget can still bask in the rhinestone glow on the sales floor at his midtown atelier.

Open Mondays through Fridays 9 am to 6 pm.

Venus and Mars
2009 Belmont Boulevard
Nashville , Tennessee
Tel: 615 915 4846

Opened in late October 2008, this vintage store and showroom is co-owned by British supermodel Karen Elson, the wife of fellow Nashville transplant Jack White of the White Stripes and Raconteurs. The store fills a simple white two-story house: The first floor holds an affordable mix of secondhand pieces like Western shirts and cotton day dresses aimed at a college clientele (Belmont University is across the street), while the upstairs features a pristine selection of antique couture by the likes of Chanel and Ossie Clark—handpicked by Karen on her international travels.

Open Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm.
