This 138-room resort east of the Danish-era port of Christiansted is steeped in history. The first owner was a Knight of Malta who built the estate in 1653; Alexander Hamilton later lived in the main house, and an 18th-century sugar mill still lords over the entrance. Established as a hotel in 1947 and continuously operated by the Armstrong family, the 340-acre property is ideal for family vacations and destination weddings. Whether you're traveling with children or on a romantic getaway, it's worth splurging on a beachside one-bedroom Doubloon villa, where you'll enjoy spacious balconies or shorefront patios, plantation-style furniture, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and enviable bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. The Oceanfront rooms have interconnecting doors to accommodate large groups, and the kid-friendly two-bedroom Family Cottage Suites have hand-painted murals and trundle beds. There are also plenty of activities and amenities for all ages, including a private dock for boat trips to Buck Island, a Kid's Camp, three restaurants, spa and beauty salon, fitness center, a pair of sandy swimming beaches, two pools, eight tennis courts with on-site coaches, and a challenging par-72 golf course with views of the Caribbean Sea. Come nightfall, guests sip Caribbean Sunset cocktails (light and dark Cruzan rum, Amaretto, lime and pineapple juice, and Grenadine) at the Terrace Bar while watching the real thing slip behind the hills.
