After a morning scouting the shops of Charlotte Amalie, stop for lunch at this cozy restaurant, where the exposed brick walls and planked ceilings hint at the building's former incarnation as a livery stable. Though the menu offers sandwiches, burgers, and fries, it would be a shame not to sample some of the authentic local specialties such as conch Creole, "old wives" (more commonly known as trigger fish), and the intensely flavorful mutton (also known as goat). A sampling of three side dishes comes with most main courses. Try the fungi (a peppery blend of cornmeal and okra), local stuffing (a zesty mix of potato, tomato, sugar, cinnamon, and raisins that is refreshingly unlike anything you'd eat at Thanksgiving), and ducana, a sweet potato dumpling that often accompanies salt fish.
