Concierge.com's insider take:

The ski-in, ski-out Arrabelle hotel is the keystone of chic Vail Square. Opened in the Lionshead area, this tiny "village" is modeled on quaint Mitteleuropa towns like Innsbruck or Prague. Many of the 62 guest rooms and suites have fireplaces and mountain views, along with the expected high-tech luxuries: free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and Bose MP3 players. The Arrabelle is joined by shops, restaurants, and 25 one- to five-bedroom residences (which can also be rented)—all surrounding a plaza that is transformed into an ice rink in winter. It's undeniably charming (deposed royalty would feel right at home, given the plush details: 1,000-thread-count sheets, heated marble floors in the baths), and for skiers it's fabulously convenient. The Arrabelle's Tavern on the Square, once part of the Centre V restaurant, has a slope-side terrace that abuts the Eagle Bahn Gondola (where you'll also find the Arrabelle's ski valet ready to take charge of your skis and boots after your last run, so you can head directly to the hotel's spa). Just try not to swoon after tasting Tavern on the Square's fried-to-order maple-bacon doughnuts with apple butter. Bringing the kids? Check out the Arrabelle's Ski Nanny service.—Updated by Sarah Tuff

This Alpine-style property with peaked roofs is "near the lifts—the perfect choice for skiers"—and steps from the Eagle Bahn, the only gondola in Vail. "Large and modern rooms" have fireplaces, canopy beds, and flat-screen TVs. Newly added in 2010, Tavern on the Square is a pub serving dishes such as bourbon-glazed pork chops. However, "its bar stools aren't especially comfortable after a day on the mountain."

From the editors of Condé Nast Traveler:

What happens when a twee European-inflected ski town meets a high-profile hotel? Enter the 36-room Arrabelle at Vail Square, in the revamped Lionshead area. This intimate property skillfully blends attention to detail with rustic charm: Generously sized rooms are styled with simplicity and accented in deep red, creamy beige, and walnut woods, while mountain views are framed by oversized windows. Amenities such as heated bathroom floors, a sunken Jacuzzi bathtub, and a gas fireplace make it hard to leave the room, and thanks to an unfailingly gracious personal butler, you almost don't have to. While the lobby is rather underwhelming—save for the crackling fireplace to sit by as you slip on your ski boots (with the assistance of a ski butler, naturally)—it's the Great Room, on the second floor, that's the real gem, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an elevated veranda. The best perk? The resort's Volvo XC70 is available for complimentary use up to 100 miles.
