Greek-born owner Eleni Skalbania, who opened the Wedgewood in 1984, is fond of traditional decor: Inlaid parquet floors, Turkish rugs, leather armchairs, antiques, brocades, and gilded fixtures are everywhere in her 83-room hotel. But modern comforts aren't neglected here—especially in the four penthouse suites, updated in summer 2006 to include Jacuzzi tubs for two, walk-in showers, heated limestone floors, and 37-inch flat-screen TVs. If the small gym isn't hitting the spot, call on general manager Philip Meyer. A former Tour de France cyclist, Meyer leads guests on spins around the seawall, the Gastown area, or even further afield (advance request required). After a ride, sampling chef Lee Parsons' French menus at the on-site Bacchus Restaurant should be nearly guilt-free.

With a "perfect downtown location—everything is within walking distance," this hotel "fits the niche between bed-and-breakfast and big chain hotel." Guests encounter richly upholstered furniture, dark cherry wood, and Murano crystal fixtures. Rooms are "very quiet, lovely, and inviting, with deep-soaking tubs." Drinks at Bacchus Lounge provide "the perfect way to relax before dinner or after a long day of sightseeing."
