CLEVELAND LAKEFRONT
STATE PARK: Laid-Back Lakeside |
 |
 |
THE SETTING
In the heart of one of Ohio's largest cities, Cleveland
Lakefront State Park provides natural relief to the metropolitan skyline.
Sand beaches, tree-lined picnic areas and panoramic views of the lake
are found within the park along the Lake Erie shoreline. Coastal plants
such as sand cherry and beach grass grow alongside trees like cottonwood,
willow and ash. The area is actually a park system comprised of several
different recreation areas: Edgewater is a 131-acre park featuring
a fishing pier, playground, paved bicycle path and swimming beach;
it also boasts a renovated pavilion and two picnic shelters. The East
55th Marina is a concession facility that offers 335 seasonal docks
for rent. Gordon Park has offshore fishing platforms, launch ramps
and a picnic area. Euclid Beach includes a swimming beach with shaded
picnic areas and a scenic observation pier. Villa Angela offers a
fitness trail, bathhouse, wheelchair-accessible fishing pier, swimming
beach, boardwalk and several scenic overlooks. Connected by a bridge
to Villa Angela, Wildwood contains a boat launch and several picnic
areas. Finally, Highlands Beach State Park, located just east of Cleveland,
boasts the state's longest natural sand beach and offers several ideal
picnic spots. |

WHAT TO SEE AND DO
It's easy to have fun on the shores of Lake
Erie. Spend a day here boating, swimming, biking, walking or just
sightseeing. Because of its higher nutrient levels and warmer temperatures,
Erie produces greater numbers and a broader variety of fish than any
other Great Lake -- anglers will find plenty of perch, walleye and
freshwater drum fresh for the catch. Spend some time here simply reveling
in nature: Head to nearby Mentor Marsh state nature area for a picnic
or bird watching, or else travel just east of Cleveland to the Hach-Otis
State Nature Preserve, famous for its forests. Another fun side trip
is Punderson State Park, a Geauga County resort area equipped with
a lodge, cabins, campground and golf course. |

HOT TIPS
The recently renovated boat ramps in the lower
areas of Edgewater Park are now reopened. Boaters should be aware
that shallow Lake Erie could be the source of high waves and violent
storms - so head out to the high seas with caution. Edgewater's Upper
Pavilion, as well as the pavilions at Euclid Beach and Wildwood, may
be reserved for family reunions or larger picnics. |
 |
PHOTO OPS
The circle lot adjacent to Upper Edgewater is known
for being one of the best viewing sites of downtown Cleveland - stop
there for some picture snapping. Also photograph the statue of Conrad
Mizar, the oldest monument in Cleveland, located near the pavilion
at Edgewater. For some interesting images, venture to Headlands Dunes,
in the eastern part of Headlands Beach State Park, to view one of
Ohio's last dune communities and several rare plant species. |
