KERRY PARK:
Sexy in Seattle |
 |
 |
THE SETTING
Seattle residents insist Kerry Park is one of the
most romantic spots in the city. A small grassy area located on West
Highland Drive, Kerry makes up for in ambience what it lacks in space.
The park is located in one of Seattle's most affluent neighborhoods,
nestled high on the south slope of Queen Ann Hill, and offers some
of the best views of the city. What could be sexier than throwing
a blanket on the grass, with the Space Needle and Mount Rainier looming
in the distance, and sharing a picnic basket with the one you love?
If you're new to the city, the park is an excellent place to get acquainted
with Seattle's geography. For the most breathtaking views, come to
Kerry Park at night, when the skyline is at its vibrant best. |

WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Kerry Park is the perfect place to just chill
out and enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet. If you have kids, send
them off to the park's little play area, which has a much-loved jungle
gym. If you haven't already stopped at Seattle's Pike Place Market
(a perfect spot to fill up your basket with fresh produce and other
goodies), then head there after lunch for a stroll. Situated just
above the waterfront, Pike Place includes food and seafood vendors,
food bars, souvenir and gift shops and is fun for browsing. Other
spots not to miss are the Seattle Aquarium, the Seattle Art Museum
and Pioneer Square, the city's oldest neighborhood that's now a booming
shopping and nightlife scene. If you have time, end your afternoon
with a harbor tour on the waterfront, or the Underground Tour, a tongue-and-cheek
look at Seattle's colorful history. |

HOT TIPS
This tiny park isn't clearly marked - when you
see the square, black-metal sculpture with four oval "windows," you'll
know you're there. Kerry has some shady spots, so if it's a hot day
arrive early to claim a picnic spot under a tree. At the park you'll
find benches, a water fountain and a coin-operated telescope, which
you can use to get an up-close view of the skyline. |

PHOTO OPS
The best time for photos at Kerry Park is at sunset
and in the evening. The park offers 180-degree views from the north
end of downtown Seattle and across Elliot Bay to Duwamish Head, and
over Puget Sound. The Space Needle stands prominently in close middle
distance, and you can also get Mount Rainier in your shot on a clear
day. Although you won't get the best view of Seattle's waterfront,
it is worth waiting patiently until a ferry boat glides into view.
For the quintessential tourist's photo, stand in the metal sculpture
titled "Changing Form" for a take-home portrait of you and the city.
Another vista of the water and mountains can be found down the road,
at the intersection of Seventh Avenue West, Eighth Place West and
West Highland Drive. |

LOCAL SPECIALTIES
Pack your basket with two Seattle favorites: fresh
fish and produce, preferably something you've picked up at Pike Place
Market. Seattle residents do appreciate their gourmet coffee, so pack
a cooler of iced java along with some bottled water. |
