Dubai's exponential growth has turned the desert city-state into the world's most glamorous construction site, but it has also created noise and visual pollution around many of the luxury hotels. The Park Hyatt, an elegant 225-room oasis overlooking the wide Persian Gulf channel, is an exception. The blue-domed, whitewashed exterior conceals a New Age contemporary interior with an Arabian Zen ambience. Dubai's population is 80 percent expat, and one senses that the friendly but inexperienced staff are recent arrivals to both the emirate and the hotel industry. However, you can't beat the waterfront location, a short distance from the gold souk and the original banking district. With an excellent spa and a quiet terrace next to a small luxury yacht marina, and unusual for the absence of a nightclub, it's the choice of a mature, discreet clientele.
When to go: October through March, to avoid the brutal summer temperatures.
Which room to book: Park Terrace Suites have large corner balconies, while rooms in the Block Four wing, away from the restaurant terrace, have the most intimate feel (doubles, $381–$517).
