When legendary tropical architect Geoffrey Bawa was still alive, an invitation to his bucolic estate two hours south of Colombo was a coup. Now, three years after his death, the private home has gone public as an elegant six-suite retreat along the Bentota River. Even the smallest accommodation, the elevated all-glass Long Room that spans the curved driveway, is a testament to Bawa's considerable talents. Drinks are delivered in record time, and guests will find themselves enchanted by the exquisite views from the veranda or one of several secluded picnic spots the architect hid about the 25-acre Italianate gardens. Bawa lived without AC, so at least for now there are only powerful fans and river breezes to combat the equatorial heat.
When to go: December through April (the rest of the year, Lunuganga operates as an artists retreat).
Which room to book: The ultra-private Cottage at Cinnamon Hill, which comes with its own steward (doubles, $250–$950).
