The latest luxe resort off Mozambique's northern coast, Vamizi is arguably the most stunning in the Quirimbas, and the only occupant (apart from a fishing village) on a seven-and-a-half-mile-long island with white sand beaches and a rain forest interior. Like most of the properties in the Quirimbas Archipelago, the project stresses both ecotourism and community building—the Zoological Society of London is a partner. The ten palatial and widely spaced villas have East African details throughout—handcrafted wood carvings, daybeds, and wrought iron lanterns. The service may be slow at times, but one finds it hard to complain in such a beautiful place with noble intentions.
When to go: September, after vacationing families have gone home.
Which room to book: No. 5 is close to the main facilities but still private, and No. 1 has its own beach.
