Reached via a 2.5-mile access road so far off the beaten path that it was literally blasted into the hillside, the 124-acre Barr Al Jissah resort houses 680 rooms—though it's the exclusive 180-room Al Husn hotel-within-a-resort, perched on a peak that overlooks the Persian Gulf, that provides its literal and metaphorical high point. After check-in at the gold-plated reception area, guests are free to wander Al Husn's private beach while their suitcases are unpacked by butlers in their rooms. Each of those rooms faces the Gulf and includes big balconies to take in the mountains. Like the rest of the resort, Al Husn is crafted from a range of organic materials—Omani marble, onyx, travertine—and wired for Wi-Fi (only here, it's complimentary). While Al Husn guests have access to the Barr Al Jissah's 19 restaurants, its own handful are easily the best; they include the mod-Moroccan Sharahzad and the seafood-based Sultanah.
