After the success of its Milan hotel, Bulgari surprised everyone by choosing Bali's rugged south coast for the follow-up. The 59 villas are perched atop a cliff near Pura Luhur Uluwatu, site of one of Bali's most sacred temples, and a tram descends from the breathtaking resort to a deserted beach. Gorgeous bamboo-roof rooms—all with a plunge pool and a breezy dining pavilion—are constructed of volcanic stone and bangkirai wood, and bathrooms are floored in black basalt and have a tub rising in the center like an altar to purity. The rates, too, are breathtaking, and despite the price, the villas are less than completely private. Il Ristorante serves creative Italian, while the seaside Sangkar does Indonesian classics with gourmet ingredients—as in fried rice with lobster. The Bulgari Spa is included among the 2007 Hot List Spas.
