This new 43-room hotel is spearheading the transformation of Phu Quoc, the largest island off the country's southwestern coast, from backpacker's bolt-hole to hot upmarket beach destination. This intimate cluster of custard-yellow colonial-style bungalows is centered around a cobalt-blue–tiled pool and surrounded by frangipani, hibiscus, and other flowering tropical plants. (If you prefer, you can cast up on the sands of the full-service beach, which is dotted with straw-thatched parasols and lapped by the bath-warm water.) The charming rooms, which were decorated by the owner, have high ceilings and locally made teak furniture inspired by 1920s Indochine furniture. Ignore the Western offerings at the restaurant in favor of the Vietnamese dishes that feature the two products for which Phu Quoc is best known—peppercorns and nuoc mam, the fermented fish sauce that's the ketchup of Vietnam. A small spa offers massages and facials.
