Perched on a hillside fronting lovely Marigot Bay, this 124-room resort is a haven of low-key elegance. A long footpath lined with frangipani and ginger lilies leads to a dimly lit reception area. Guest rooms with wooden plantation shutters and wide verandas are given modern touches such as Brazilian hardwood flooring, Wi-Fi, and pillowtop beds. Slate-tiled bathrooms are a room highlight, with their pizza-size showerheads and generous portions of Kiehl's toiletries. Some staff are noticeably greener than others, though as a whole the service is friendly. There's only one full on-site restaurant, The Boudreau, but a quick ride across the bay on the hotel's solar-powered ferry can whisk you to other lively eateries.

When to go: January and early February, when there are evening breezes from the trade winds.
Which room to book: Top-floor Bay View suites have unobstructed views of the harbor, plus four-poster beds and lofted ceilings.
