In the heart of the fashionable Mitte district, the 146-room Hotel de Rome gives the reigning Hotel Adlon and The Regent (formerly the Four Seasons) some serious competition. Hotelier Rocco Forte has redone this 1889 former Dresdner Bank building, and it's all kid gloves when you arrive, with a seamless check-in that gets you to your room in minutes. Interior designer Tommaso Ziffer's decor is chic and restrained, with color schemes of Pompeiian red, black, and cream, or taupe and dove blue. The handsome bar overlooks the Bebelplatz, and afternoon tea is served in the Opera Court, under its original glass roof. The only wrinkle is the restaurant, which does an uninteresting Germanic take on Mediterranean-Italian cooking.

When to go: May through July, when the linden trees and lilacs are in bloom.
Which room to book: A deluxe double on the first through third floors with a view over the Bebelplatz.
