LOOKING FOR LISTS FROM OTHER YEARS?
The first luxury hotel to open in Egypt's second city since the Belle Epoque, the Four Seasons occupies the former site of the colonial-era Hotel San Stefano. While the new 118-room tower adjoins a huge modern condo- and shopping mall-complex, inside it manages to feel like an exclusive landmark and retains much of the esprit—including an attentive liveried staff—of the Deauville-inspired original. Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon has given rooms warm yellow tones, Roman-style baths, neoclassic furniture, and essential modern touches such as flat-screen TVs and Nespresso machines. A round infinity pool on the fourth-floor terrace gives guests the sensation of sitting by the Mediterranean Sea, while Alexandria's nouveau beau monde has taken to the public areas, adopting for their meeting ground the Lebanese-inspired gallery with hand-painted murals (part of the restaurant), a hothouse garden (part of the pool area), and a third-floor terrace shisha café. Later this year a tunnel will link the hotel to a private beach; the construction of a marina, cabanas, and residential villas will continue into 2009.
