The imminent summer Olympics have brought heightened competition to Beijing's field of five-star hotels, but The Regent stands out, thanks to a concierge team that goes the extra mile—literally, tracking down a checked-out guest to hand-deliver items left behind. While the front desk staff lacks the same commitment, the rest of the young team works hard to please, adapting dishes, for example, to the most exacting dietary demands. Meals are reasonably priced but not outstanding except for the weekend brunch, a copious culinary affair of Peking duck, dim sum, sushi, and champagne. The 500 guest rooms are elegantly done, swathed in deep plum velvet, with attractive silky pillows and Chinese watercolors on the polished wood walls. A large glass-top desk and ergonomic office chair round out the bedroom comforts, while gossamer silk encased in a glass wall creates privacy within the well-lit bathroom. For relaxation there's a sunlit indoor pool as well as an exceptional spa. With Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City a ten-minute walk away, the hotel is well positioned for both business and leisure visitors.
