Perhaps as a precursor to life after professional tennis, Juan Carlos Ferrero, the world's top-ranked player in 2003, has opened a hotel with flair in Bocairent, not far from his hometown of Valencia. Ferrero's hotel transforms a nineteenth-century structure into a sky-blue palacio with mod decor in each of the 12 suites (six of which have Jacuzzi-equipped terraces), and plush amenities including Hermès toiletries, cotton-and-silk sheets, and massive Bang & Olufsen plasma TVs. Admittedly, the hotel's location behind an industrial warehouse leaves something to be desired, but 30 acres of manicured gardens help block out any distractions. So does the surprisingly good restaurant, where chef Silvia Gavara turns out a luscious Mediterranean menu at dinner and three types of fresh-squeezed juices at breakfast—quite possibly the best breakfast in Spain. The high-tech gym and Ayurvedic spa offer a place to work it all off, but you might as well take advantage of the local expertise and sign up for lessons on the court.
