The owners of Helsinki's Palace Kämp have opened a spin-off property, minimalist in design but full up on service and clever touches. A converted 1920s bank building next door to the Palace Kämp, the GLO shares with the original hotel not only its terrific location steps from the port and shops lining the Esplanadi but also the new Palace Kämp Day Spa. The generously sized rooms feel like a mod Finnish home store with dark-wood floors, plush throw rugs, leather headboards, and groovy lamps galore. Unusual in-room amenities include pillows stuffed with corn fiber, sheets that stabilize humidity and heat to regulate body temperature, and, upon request, a bedside "glo" light designed to help combat seasonal affective disorder. While there's no traditional concierge, the helpful front desk staff assist with everything from restaurant reservations to providing free access to the hotel's two Smart cars or touring bikes. The restaurant La Cocina offers a full breakfast and a 24-hour room service menu, albeit with very limited selection—you're better off grabbing a snack from one of the many area cafés.
