This status-conscious city has a new jewel in its crown with the opening of the 218-room Ritz-Carlton in the Uptown neighborhood. While the monolithic sand-colored exterior feels institutional, the interior features the company's trademark old-world elegance, here accompanied by a tremendous modern art collection—fitting, since the property is just blocks from the city's modern art museum. Rooms are large—the smallest is 475 square feet—and bathed in the soft hues of Texas sunsets. Fun amenities include a DVD player, an iPod alarm clock, and, in a particularly nice touch, a single-cup coffee maker that appears at turndown service. Off the lobby, a small lounge serves complimentary fresh guacamole and margaritas every evening, and at Fearing's, the outdoor bar is the place to see and be seen, especially on lovely evenings when patrons are warmed by the outdoor fireplace. Texas charm infuses the service at all levels, from the bellmen to the concierges, but a lack of on-site parking often means long lines at the valet; be sure to budget extra time.
