Although this is where he met his first great love, Goethe wouldn't recognize Gerbermühle today: Originally a sixteenth-century flour mill (and in Goethe's time a proud villa), the structure now houses an intimate design hotel. But it's the property's upscale beer garden on the River Main that's drawing Frankfurt's most chicky-micky (fashionable) crowd, who happily order gourmet riffs on dishes such as Handkäse mit Musik (a marinated sour milk cheese with caraway seeds and onions), and the veal Tafelspitz with a nine-herb green sauce—a favorite of Goethe's. The writer might not recognize the place, but he would definitely book a table (entrées, $23–$46).
