At the Hyatt on the Bund, relaxation reigns underground—in a subtle blond-wood realm. The pampering begins in the locker room, with mini bottles of organic goji berry Ba Yan Ka La products. The Yuan Massage ($109) kicks off with an aromatic oolong tea footbath followed by a foot massage that actually starts at the knee, using a jade stone roller that tickles at first but sends recuperative waves throughout the body's meridians. Warm massage tables soothe, while recorded sounds of running water and birdsong block out the urban cacophony. In keeping with local tradition, our therapist kneaded through a towel placed atop bare skin, but his Chinese acupressure prowess kept the experience intense (massages, $95–$207).
