It's not surprising that high-adrenaline activities—whitewater rafting, sightseeing via microlight aircraft, and bungy-jumping off the bridge that spans the jagged gorge—go with the spectacular scenery of Victoria Falls. Toka Leya Camp, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, is an ideal luxury base from which to do all this and more. Its 12 raised safari tents are linked by wooden walkways and are comfortable, uncluttered, and practical rather than self-consciously chic (there's air-conditioning and an indoor/outdoor shower but no bathtub), designed to withstand the extreme climate and maximize views of the Zambezi on one side and of the shady canopy of jackalberry, knobthorn, and waterberry trees on the other. Each tent has its own solar panel, water geyser, and battery, in keeping with Wilderness Safaris' aim to lessen its environmental footprint. There are luxuries, too: The dining, lounge, and bar areas are generously proportioned, and a riverside infinity pool and a small spa help guests to unwind at day's end. The Zambian staff are a delight, whether escorting you into Livingstone town or baking thin-crust pizzas in the outdoor oven for an impromptu lunch.
When to go: The cooler, dry winter months (June-Aug.) for game viewing; the rainy season (Jan-Mar.) to spot migrant birds and see Vic Falls flowing at full capacity.
Which room to book: Tent 12 is the best for privacy; Tent 7 has a beautiful baobab tree next to it.
