Secluded on its own island (arrival is by motorboat most of the year), this nine-tent camp within a 62,000-acre private concession in the southern Okavango Delta is one of two new camps there by &Beyond (formerly CCAfrica). Water lilies, hippos, frogs, and other creatures provide inspiration for Xaranna's playful decor (think funky embroidered lily pad-shaped cushions and fat-bottomed hippo side tables). Each air-conditioned tent has a bathroom with a nifty dressing room, freestanding tub, and walk-in shower that leads outdoors to another shower and an infinity pool big enough for laps. Camp life involves not much more than drifting down reed-lined waterways in a makoro, watching for hippo and elephant crossings while appreciating the beauty in the details: hundreds of iridescent dragonflies and jewel-bright kingfishers darting in and out of the reeds. The chorus of thousands of painted reed frogs will lull you to sleep after a dinner of sweet potato soup, chicken fajitas, and chocolate fondue.
When to go: April through June to avoid the extreme heat.
