Asia's most vertiginous hotel is on floors 79 through 93 of the Shanghai World Financial Center, in the Pudong district. All 174 generous-sized rooms provide jaw-dropping Shanghai or Pudong panoramas, cloudlike bedding, and cashmere-soft carpets, and come with extra touches such as diagrams to explain the light switches and even motion sensor-operated heated commode seats. Owner Minoru Mori, who built Toyko's groundbreaking Roppongi Hills complex, influenced the art here, which includes hundreds of kitsch ceramics by Liu Jianhua hanging from the ceiling of 100 Century Avenue, a highly recommended showplace restaurant on the ninety-first floor. Two additional restaurants and 12 elegant private dining rooms offer everything from comfort food such as soup dumplings to formal banquets.
When to go: September and October's clear skies mean optimal vistas.
