Interiors maven Kelly Wearstler is giving Miami financial district stalwarts the Mandarin Oriental and the Four Seasons runs for their money with the Viceroy Group's new Brickell Avenue condo-hotel. Guests sprawl on tasteful green- and white-striped loungers with tasty snacks like spicy beef empanadas by day, and the lounge morphs into the post-work go-to for banker types by night. The 168 rooms are done up in classic Wearstler style with Asian inflections: A stork print hangs above the four-poster bed, Chinese-style lamps sit on an onyx desk, and there are azure leather armchairs, and black marble floors. Double rooms have kitchenettes and vast walk-in showers. The Viceroy complex is spread over three towers, with the hotel and most facilities in one, the stunning spa
in another, and residences filling the third. This layout can lead to confusing navigation: To access the fiftieth-floor pool area, which has jaw-dropping views of Biscayne Bay, you have to switch elevators on the fifteenth floor, where the enormous outdoor pool and the attractive Deco-style restaurant with its good pan-American menu are situated. And despite the fact that this is for all intents and purposes a business hotel, the in-room Wi-Fi service is spotty.
When to go: Miami tends to enjoy perfect weather around Memorial Day.
Which room to book: A junior suite with a number ending in 11, for the floor-to-ceiling windows
